Re: Best Eyes of each year poll/query |
ahhh...EXCELLENT poll question!
1977: 10/29
My favorite ever. Gorgeous, jazzy lines floated in the first 3 mins. before any lines are even sung. Jerry channels Wes Montgomery. Tempo is perfect; not too fast and not too slow. The jam leading into the final verse is spell-binding and intense; the whole band is in on the inspired madness. The Eyes to end all Eyes.
1976: 6/9
Not as intense as 10/29/77, but longer and even jazzier. Not sure how exactly how long but Jerry jams for a good 6 plus minutes before singing a word. Eyes for those who believe the Dead were at their best taking their time and exploring their inner jazz child. The LIG that follows aint too shabby either.
1974: 6/16
The "stronger than dirt" years of Eyes. Tough to pick any one from this year because they're all real good and--it must be said--many sound quite similar. The structure is identical. Nice controlled jamming from Jerry, then after the last verse the familiar "stronger" jam journey. This particular one empties out into a kick-ass "BigRiver", which is why it gets the nod over the others of '74.
1973: 11/11
can't go wrong with Eyes from this year, or anything from this show. Eyes here gets overshadowed by the famous DarkStar, but it shouldn't.
1982: 4/3
A return to the slower-tempo Eyes of the 70's, and it's most welcomed. Just can't stand how they speeded out Eyes in the 80's, but this is a rare exception of back-to-school take your time Eyes, which very interesting ideas expressed by everyone.
1990: 3/29
Branford, Branford, Branford.
